Tisinye Mission – 22-24 November 2023
The Navigators, through their missionaries, Paula and Stephanie Whitney, invited me to minister to the Kuria people in Tisinye. Tisinye is in the south-west of Kenya at the Tanzania border. I drove down with one of my disciples, Edwin, and a Navigator STEM staff called Reagan. We spend a whole day with the youth of Ihore village. We discussed biblical sexuality and shared the gospel. 23 Kuria youth gave their lives to Christ. We were hosted by disciples of Paul and Stephanie- a couple by the names Daniel and Margaret Boke. The mission was successful. Paul and Stephanie Whitney are an American couple that have served among the Kuria since 1993, in Tanzania- Serengeti district. They have been involved in community development, evangelism and discipleship. In December 2002 they crossed the border into Kenya to live and disciple among the Kuria in Tisinye, Ihore village. The Kuria tribe predominantly live in south-west Kenya in Migori County. However, more than half the Kuria people live across the border in Tanzania in Tarime and Musoma districts. They are mainly agriculturalists and pastoralists and have mostly lived in homesteads made of circular grass-thatched huts. However, in recent years, many have built modern stone houses. In the past, education was not well received among Kurias despite the great efforts of early church mission groups. This resulted in low literacy rate among the traditional Kurias and the large number who are animists. The Kurias have various traditions some of which include circumcision of both sexes. It is usually done at the age of 13 after which the boy or girl is deemed ready for marriage. The circumcision of the girl, known as Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is illegal and dangerous. While ministering to the youth, we challenged them to be bold and confident in their stand against FGM. We also encouraged them to be enterprising so that they would bring prosperity to their families.
